the difference between a Porsche and a ferrari is that the porsche is made to do a job well, like a Bosch drill or something. the fact it looks good is secondary.

Italian cars on the other hand are the reverse, they are fast, look the bollocks but are pretty unreliable on the whole. Ask and fiat, alfa or ferrari driver.

Oh, Elise's were built for leprachauns but are good once you're in/if you get in!

My ex-boyfriend's dad owned a 1969 Targa (I'm thinking it was the '69 - it was that fantastic green coupe) and I took it for a couple of laps around Elkhart Lake track a few years ago. That was certainly an experience - I was told later that I was driving like a granny but my teeth had been shattered down to splinters so I knew I wasn't going *that* slow. (Okay, so I did kind of pussy-foot it at around ninety or so but I was told the thing maxed out at 110 and I foolishly thought I'd end up blowing the engine if I pushed it...I'm not that stupid anymore.)

It's one of the slower 911s, hitting 0-60 in around ten seconds, but that was plenty enough for me. I would never own one myself but I would schmooze up to anyone who did and beg them to let me race their car. It's worth whatever acts of debauchery are required on your part, and then some.

bravo! john. the opening was said exactly a month ago on national public radio here. leave 911 for the porsche.

i love that car and have a good friend who repairs them. we have fun from time to time oooing and ahhhing these beautiful cars.

i will never want or be able to own a newer one, but there is always the hope of an older model. especially if we had our friend to help care for it.

and you are so right. for all practical purposes (and what can be more practical than hearing that great engine and watching people watch you), you don't need to do 150-60 or 70 will do.
someday, someday...

The Porsche 911 is a triumph of evolution over design. Which means that it's great. And there have been more different 911 models over the past forty years than there are atoms in the universe. Fact. And WTF were they thinking when they created the Cayenne?!

I know, that's why I said that I was more interested in the engine... And I've been in an Elise - I hope you have a good chiropractor!

A 911 has got to be on everyones "must drive" list.
Along with the Elise :)

>My first impressions sitting in it were that it's not as luxurious as my current car but everything was functional and looked pretty solid

WTF? You don't buy sports cars for comfort or build quality - it just makes the car heavier.
