Right. That sort of stuff's been off-limits since Windows 2000, so you think they'd have learnt by now.

Well I hit the problem with TextPad that was trying to write to the HKLM registry hive, then I realised that loads of other software could potentially do the same so switched UAC off so it wouldn't trouble me!

I wouldn't mind using UAC if all the software I run could deal with it so come the final release of Vista maybe I'll leave it on... I'm pretty sure you can turn most of the security off - in fact when you first install Vista it creates your user without a password, you have to explicitly go and set one!

I can't believe Vista lets you disable UAC - what's the point of that? Can you turn off all the other security too?

Oh don't panic, it's all under source control, I can roll back at any time! Plus 3.0 is quite a way off yet... As for Redmond, I'm afraid I like Yorkshire way too much!

Wow, that was a lengthy consultation period with your JBS users before making the decision to migrate! Question posted in your forum at noon on Saturday and you've made the switch by evening on Sunday! Ever thought of a career at Redmond...?

John, that's pretty cheap! And Christmas is coming up soon...

It's too late Ian, I've already moved JBS to VS2005 so I've jumped on the bandwaggon and can stick with Vista! :)

And I'm sure a lot of big MS customers will continue to stick with VS2003 for some time yet (especially with the tricky prospect of upgrading ASP.NET projects to VS2005).

I'm pretty surprised that VS.NET 2003 won't be supported in Vista, especially when VB6 will be! Not that I personally wish to use VS.NET 2003, but I'm sure plenty of people need to, and will be a bit pissed off at this decision.

Still, it sounds like MS are hearing this feedback, and may well be forced to back down / compromise - check out http://blogs.msdn.com/bharry/archive/2006/09/29/777681.aspx

Sorry John, I was going for the broken record angle! ;-) Hey, did you know that the Mac mini starts at £399.00 and the iMac starts at £679.00? They're practically giving them away nowadays...
