Is there a key (true/false) in the XML to show hidden images?
I don't want to unhide stuff, I just occasionally want all the images shown.
I had a look but didn't see anything.

Apparition on "Regular Expressions"

While writing the first draft of this post, I managed to figure out my problem, but here is what happened:

I have several hundred wallpapers where the filenames include the resolution, and since I use these wallpapers on several computers, I have several versions of the same wallpaper. I tried using the RegEx below (shortened) to exclude the other resolutions and was disappointed that it didn't work.

^wallpaper_.*_(800|1024|1152|1280x960)\.jpg

My first instinct after looking at the names that JBS prints on the images was to remove the file extension from the RegEx, but that didn't work either. It took me a while to realize that the carat (^) was what wasn't working.

I tried using a RegEx tester program (Rad Software Regular Expression Designer) that is supposed to be aimed at the way .NET parses RegEx, and it worked fine with the carat, which was why I was confused at first.

Do you do any sort of pre-parsing to the RegEx before passing it to the .NET framework? Since removing the carat works fine for my purposes it's not urgent, but it would be nice to have some detail on any gotchas in your RegEx parsing.

Anyways, I've been using your Background Switcher mostly just today (I originally found it at work, but I don't have many wallpapers there) and it is replacing my previous one because of the vast difference in offered features.

It is running perfectly with almost 4,200 wallpapers (2GB) and even over my home network. (This was a major thing for me because I really wasn't looking forward to copying that 2GB to my laptop.) It was a little slow the first time I had it switch my wallpaper, but it's been pretty decent ever since.

I'm using the Flickr feature at work, which is really nice, and I love that you have filtering available on your Google image search feature so I might start using that at work too. The Facebook feature didn't work when I just tried it, but I'm going to give it another shot tomorrow in case it's on Facebook's side.

Keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing what other interesting stuff you have cooked up for the next version.

(A preview button would be nice on this forum. I have a terrible tendency of noticing mistakes only after I make them.)

I realize I've asked you this once before, but I can't find the email you sent.
Can you please provide the regex expression I need to use to have it ignore images with the word Holiday in it.
Also, since I know nothing about regex or how your using it, does it check only the filename, or the contents as in plain text tags within the image?

Reason I'm asking for the expression here is so I can search the board for it if I accidentally delete it in the program again.
(Obviously I can't be trusted to save emails) lol

when i istalled it it did pick a random image from my wallpaper folder and show up, when i rebooted, desktop only shows selected background color, even though the "active background" is set as the background and, it show up in the property menu.

setting another image then resetting the active background didn't work. I'm running it on windows XP SP2. no error messages were given.

John,

Thanks you for your amazing app. I'm always amazed at how generouse people are.

I am having trouble getting JBS to get into my picasa account now that that I have changed my google password. I used to be able to have "random Picasa photos from a specific person" access even my private albums but since I updated my google password it has stopped working. This is to be expected of course, I just can't for the life of me find where to change the google password in JBS. I tried to reinstall to no avail.

Thanks for you time,

Hi John.
Quick question.
If I change the following line (95) in the settings xml, will it persist until I manually change it in the program, or will it reset to the GUI settings each time I open the program?

<photo_cache_timeout_in_hours>8</photo_cache_timeout_in_hours>

I've set it to scan my entire collection (714,638 photos (145GB) 5,833 Folders) and it's taking well upwards of half an hour to repopulate 8 hours after I turn the computer on.
I'd like to set it to 23 hours so it will only populate in the morning on boot when nothing else is running.
If it will revert, maybe you could add a line (not necessarily in the GUI) that could tell it to update at a specific time, or at boot if said time has passed?

Hiya John-

On Lifehacker I just read about some (apparently?) new feed that Bing has with their homepage pictures. (http://lifehacker.com/5626382/set-bing-backgrounds-as-an-automatically-updated-wallpaper)

I tried to use the feed that the mentioned themepack uses and they must do something weird with their feed because JBS doesn't seem to like it saying that it doesn't contain any images. Searching the form turned up a post saying that you would have to manually make the feed work in a future version.

I humbly request that you do that with this feed: http://themeserver.microsoft.com/default.aspx?p=Bing&c=Desktop&m=en-US

I was looking over the options for about an hour but couldnt find anything that solves my problem...i gave him an inputfolder with about 120 pics and choose Mosaic Mode...now what he does is he randomly takes pictures out of the folder for the mosaic-wallpaper, now the problem is i have the same picture like 3-4 times on the whole wallpaper instead of using every pic in the folder just one time! im form austria, i hope you understand what i mean :-)

Hi,

The calendar in the background is very useful for setting new appointments.
It would be nice to add two options in the calendar:
- Have the capability to extend the number of displayed months up to 6 months
- Write the ISO week number in front of each week of the calendar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_week_date)

I just recently came across your beautiful little Proggie here, and I must say, it's one of the best I've seen. Was wondering about a little something though.
Right on the front you have the picture mode. I like the random mode, but what I don't care for is the option to stretch / crop, as it makes pics look crappy. Was wondering if you could make random mode with choices of which modes to not include in random pic mode.

Let me start with a gigantic thank you. Many years ago the wallpaper switcher that I used stopped being supported and I couldn't find any good free programs to suit my needs for a long time. Then one wonderful day I found JBS. You've made a great application and it's thoroughly appreciated.

My question is what happened to to Tiled picture mode that was available in older versions? I have been a bit lazy in keeping JBS up to date so I recently jumped from 3.6.1 to 4.3 in one go. In 3.6.1 there was a drop-down menu next to each picture that I could change to Tile, but this functionality does not appear to be in 4.3 (At least I can't for the life of me find it).

The reason I ask is because I have a collection of multimonitor wallpapers that only look right when tiled. Back before I found JBS I was stuck with joining two 1680x1050 backgrounds together into a 3360x1050 file. These still worked fine in JBS but then when I moved up to three monitors I had to switch to Tiled mode. This made the first half of the wallpaper repeat over in my third monitor.

For example, here is a reduced size look at what one of my files looks like and how my entire desktop looked with two monitors on 3.6.1.
http://img262.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=60843_TwoMonitors_122_511lo.jpg

Now when I switched to three monitors I set them to Tiled and although I was still using the same file as above, it would appear like this in 3.6.1:
http://img202.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=60844_ThreeMonitors_122_392lo.jpg

It might not be the most appealing view to some people, but as I always have something open in one of my side monitors it actually worked like a charm for me. At least until I have the time to go back and break apart my hundreds of files to just one background each and then I can use the "Different pictures on each monitor" setting.

Now when I updated to 4.3 I am unable to find any settings that will allow an image to be tiled across multiple monitors. There are a few stretching, cropping, and scaling options but none that work well for this specific situation.

I realize this may be a rare issue, as I doubt many people have dual monitor wallpapers that they are trying to fit on three. But it seemed a little odd to me that this functionality was removed with an update. Is there any chance of it coming back in the future?

If it's still in there and I'm just blind, or if it's been brought up before, I apologize. I did a forum search and checked through all the version logs you posted but I didn't see anything like this mentioned.

Thanks again for the great program and your dedicated support.

I don't know if this has been raised before.

Is it possible for the application to retain the aspect ratio of the images in polaroid/postcard/thumbnail modes, that is, if desired by the user.

I have noticed that, especially in the polaroid/postcard modes, the pictures are centered, hence, the whole image is not displayed.

When showing an image in single-mode it would be interesting to read the image-description out of the EXIF-data fields.

I'm using Geosetter (http://www.geosetter.de/en) to descripe pictures. So it would be nice to read out this descriptions.

Mac on "Incorrect third monitor"

I'm running XP SP3 on an old nVidia card (5600). I have two monitors, the left one running landscape 1600x1200, the right one running portrait 1200x1600. The right hand monitor is reported by the system as monitor 1, and has my task bar on it. The left hand monitor is reported by the system as monitor 2. I _believe_ that monitor 2 has been flagged as my primary monitor so that applications (games) that wish to go full screen will appear on the landscape monitor that they are expecting.

Here's where it gets weird. The system only reports those two monitors, but in JBS, if I set it to "display on only one monitor", the droplist offers me three monitors. If I pick monitor 3, it behaves as if I had one large 2800x1600 monitor.

Why do I care? Because when I pick "display a separate image on each monitor", it very carefully puts an image on monitor 1, then an image on monitor 2, then an image on monitor 3 -- except that the image on monitor 3 overwrites both of the other images. The net effect is that it always puts on image over my combined desktop area, no matter how I set the options (unless I use "on only one monitor" and pick 1 or 2).

I'm not sure if it's my nVidia driver, or something strange about having one of the monitors rotated, or because my task bar isn't on my primary monitor, or because my primary monitor isn't the first monitor, or what. But I'd really love to have this working.

Running JBS 4.3, for what it's worth. Have tried the "work around incorrect ordering" both on and off and it doesn't make any difference. The problem really seems to be with it's attempt to use this virtual third monitor.

Many thanks for making JBS and letting us all use it for free.

I thought that it would be really neat to have some sort of custom message on the desktop, like how the calendar is, but with your own message. I think that would be great because I like to put simple reminders and goals on my desktop, and editing every single background image in Photoshop with the custom text is annoying. I think that others might find that useful as well.

I like the idea of profiles too. ( mentioned here: http://johnsadventures.com/forum/topic.php?id=995 )
Different dirs And rss feeds I have: work better on (4tiles or tilesMosaic, or polaroid) modes. Depends on dir, or rss source.

You can kind of do this now: ( to change: you must export/import. )
On the front page, you can set "use rand profile"

Profiles would allow:
[1] rand profile, like "supriseme)", chooses export-file at random. Loads, then behave as normal.
But smarter. Facebook photos = bigger. Rand devart = tiles.
[2] easier way to change between 2 or more presets. (systray JDS icon rightclick could show export-file listing )

Profiles are normal "export"-ed settings. Save your exported settings to:
./profiles/* #at /JDS-dir/profiles/
p = random.choice( glob("profiles/*.settings" ))
Jds.load_profile(p)
Jds.next_rand()
For Simplicity:You can keep the GUI as is.
Can JBS set profile to import on cmdline, or as start/execute args? Then:

Example Cmd args
Usage:
jbs.exe [random | next] [-p <profile>]

choose Profile ( in export dir )
-p <settings>
jbs.exe -p people

Same profile as last run
jbs.exe

Choose Random profile in ( in export dir ).

Feature Request: Support for text RSS feeds.

I'm guessing the Calendar in the corner is text rendered. Picture RSS feeds are also already supported. I'm wanting to subscribe to a bible verse of the day rss feed and have that overlaid on top of the current background. With RSS, the other possibilities are endless as well

I was reading in another topic that JPG is used on Vista/7 rather than BMP to allow for the transition effect. I was just wondering if doing so slows the performance when Windows loads the JPG into the DWM.exe. I get a large studder in video playing, etc, when the background changes. Is it possible this would be avoided when using BMP instead?

Hi

Well, I call myself as a power-user of the Background changer. I got every few seconds new backgrounds from Facebook-Friends and my own pictures from the hard-disk.

Well ... verry often I see unknown people on facebook-friends-picture and I rack "Hmmmmm ... where's this picture from? Which friends picture is it?"

It would be easier if it were standing at the edge of the name or the profile name of the friend.

I realize I've sort-of mentioned it before, but I'd like to ask specifically...

Is there an easy way to edit your algorithm so the amount of overlay per image could also be applied to the edges of the desktop area?

The reason I ask is because I use the montage option, and there are certain areas of the screen that never change because an image won't fit there. I don't assume that all of the desktop would eventually have an image on it before it goes back to the chosen background, but I don't see an issue with the percentage of coverage allowed by a user to also be assumed as the percentage covered by the edge of the screen.

If it would be an issue... let me know, and I'll drop it.
I just like having JBS as a semi-quasi screensavery sort of thing when I've left the desk, because honestly, in Win7, clicking the 'Show Desktop' button is the fastest way to walk away and still enjoy your screen ;)
