No picture browser icon in tray

I do not have the picture browser icon in my tray anymore. Where did it go?

Windows sometimes hides the icon after a period of time (I believe it does this by default). There should be a little arrow near the clock in the system tray, clicking that should show it up.
If it's still not there, right-click on the taskbar and select 'Task Manager', switch to the 'Processes' tab and see if you can find 'BackgroundSwitcher.exe'. If you can't then it's not running and you'll need to restart it! If you can then it's possible that something strange happened to Windows explorer to remove the tray icon (I've never seen this myself but I believe it could be possible). In this case select 'BackgroundSwitcher.exe', then click 'End Process' and choose 'Yes'. Restart JBS and the tray should reappear.
Let me know how you get on.

I have the icon problem as well. Sometimes if I leave the computer (after I turn it on) for a loooooong time it will finally appear.
Normally I actually have to install the program again. It happens so often I have the installer on my desktop next to the icon.
Re-running the program does not fix the error. I also don't hide my inactive icons. No arrow, in other words.
Oh and the program works on start up. I love it! Just the icon is not in the trey.
I have never tried using the "quick launch" toolbar but I am going to see if that works although I'm not a fan of that little "tweek" haha.
I do plan to donate big time when I get some money!

What version of Windows are you using? And do you have any 3rd party software installed that does anything related to icons, shortcuts or the taskbar? Something like UltraMon? And are you saying that it disappears and then magically reappears again? And just to confirm, we're talking about the following icon next to the clock:

I can't see any reason why having to re-install JBS would make the tray icon come back. As long as you've exited it (confirming BackgroundSwitcher.exe has gone from the 'Processes' tab of 'Task Manager', which you can get by right-clicking on a blank bit of the task bar) then when you restart JBS it should find itself back in the tray again. The installer doesn't do anything clever and indeed neither does JBS, it just does standard things to put the tray icon in place.
When you re-run it from a shortcut (JBS that is, not the installer) it should prompt you to open the settings dialog so you can still control it even if the tray icon is missing.
I'm glad you like JBS by the way and sorry the icon keeps disappearing!

Is there a way to hide the icon all the time?
Thanks.

There isn't in the current version, but there will be in the next version. There's be an option in 'More Settings' to hide the icon and to launch the settings dialog you'll just have to run the app again and it'll come up. I'm hoping to release JBS 4 in a few weeks time.

The disappearing sys tray icon problem is a long time issue with Windows, and there appears to be more than one cause, or at least solution.
Basically, MS doesn't seem to know what causes it, and there might be several different things. Some solutions I've seen are:
- log off/back on
- disable UPnP and SSDP services
- (opposite day) enable the above services to Autostart
- use a startup manager to delay loading of applications
- use TaskManager to kill explorer.exe and restart (worked for me)Clearly this issue is not caused by the background switcher. It worked fine for me until a couple days ago, and I am not sure what changed. Hopefully it will stop doing that.
Anyway, having this problem caused me to ask for a program addition.
I wanted to change my background screen, which I usually do by double-clicking the sys tray icon. Since that wasn't visible, I launched the app. Surprise! No button to switch. Should be one right at the bottom in the Switching Options, I think.

Hold down 'Shift' when you 'OK' the settings dialog and that'll force an immediate switch!

Cool! I guess I was a bit too impatient to wait for the little popup that told me exactly that. Thanks.

No problem!

The shift+close method works, but often I want to change the background again immediately if the pic is not what I wanted. So I have to re-open the settings and shift+close again to see if it improves.
Since my work computer still has this system tray problem, I wanted to make a new suggestion: add a "change now" button to change the background without closing the settings dialog.

You can use the shortcut key to switch the background, which by default is Ctrl+Alt+n, so that might help you out instead of bringing up the settings dialog all the time.

Log-off/Log-on method worked for me. It is nice to know that the problem is just caused by Microsoft; JBS is wonderful.
